What is ZAPP?

A program of Richard Hugo House, ZAPP is the Zine Archive and Publishing Project: a zine library on Seattle's Capitol Hill. Since its founding in 1996, ZAPP's collection has grown from 1,500 to over 20,000 zines, comics, chapbooks and other small press periodicals, making it one of the largest zine collections in the world. This extensive collection of rare and unique publications is open to the public. ZAPP is a friendly community where writers, artists and free thinkers alike can share their ideas, experiences and common interests.

ZAPP vision statement

The Zine Archive and Publishing Project (ZAPP) is a program of Richard Hugo House. The archive and workspace is devoted to collecting, preserving and promoting self-published and independent zines, comics and other hard-to-classify small press periodicals of all types.

Through its collection, physical space and organizing and cataloging efforts, ZAPP seeks to maintain, validate and make accessible publications outside the literary mainstream. ZAPP is dedicated to fostering and sustaining a strong community of self-publishers and championing freedom of expression in Seattle and beyond.

ZAPP's priorities are sustaining a “living” archive of past and current zines with the help of dedicated volunteers, allowing accessibility to the archive  through public open hours, supporting zine writers by providing a workspace and promoting ZAPP locally, nationally and internationally as one of the largest collections of its kind.

What is a zine?

“A zine (pronounced “zeen,” like “magazine”) is a self-published, small circulation, noncommercial booklet or magazine, usually produced by one person or a few individuals. Zines are publications done for the love of doing them, not to make a profit or a living. Most zines are photocopied, but their production can range from handwritten or handmade booklets to offset-printed magazine-like publications (but with a print run of hundreds or a few thousand instead of hundreds of thousands).” – Zine World

Submit your zine(s) to ZAPP!

Yes, ZAPP is accepting donations! We happily accept all kinds, from comics and mail art to chapbooks and any other small press publication. If you publish a zine that you want to donate to our library, please fill out/sign the form for each zine. This helps us to know where you think your zine should be categorized. We will do our best to honor your designation. If you wish to donate a large collection of zines to ZAPP, please contact us in advance with a general description of the items you wish to donate.

For more information about donating items to ZAPP's library, please contact zapp@hugohouse.org, noramukaihata@hugohouse.org or (206) 322-7030.

What can you do to be involved?

Please help ZAPP by becoming a volunteer. We will need your help for open hours and other current projects. Have you also thought of becoming a ZAPP intern?
